The Box Tops “The Letter” Disc-O-Teen, 1967
When I was a kid my dad and I used to drive around in the car together a lot—short trips, long trips and everything in between. He would make mix-tapes to listen to in the car, and I’m pretty sure that The Letter was on every single one of them. When I grew up, I didn’t listen to the The Box Tops so much as I did Big Star, but this was my introduction to Alex Chilton.
p.s. They don’t actually play the song live in this clip, but they’re on the show and it’s quite funny and weird, which is nice to think about right now.
